Top marks for first class

What a great movie! Thoroughly enjoyable for viewers who couldn’t give a toss about x this and x that and just want to be entertained and also for die-hard fans of the comic universe. Great story, lots of action and great dialogue and a marvelous sense of humor as well.

One can praise the cast and go on about the characters and true enough, they are all great but of course, one would be lying if one said anything except that Michael Fassbender stole the show as the brooding powder-keg that is Magneto. What was fascinating was watching Fassbender, an Irish-German actor who grew up in both countries speak perfect French, Spanish and German and then in English he has a definite touch of an Irish accent. With McAvoy’s almost Austin Powersesque Charles Xavier (‘Groovy?’, anyone?) and Fassbender’s vocal prowess, there were lots of dialogue and scenery chewing to be done.

As an adaptation of the comics AND a tie-in to the movie series, it worked wonderfully. Sure, the fanboys will find something to whine about (Angel never worked with Magneto , etc. ) but they’re not really the standard one should measure audience satisfaction by and not really the types of people open minded enough to just enjoy something without fretting about continuity and costumes.

So now I still have to see Thor and Green Lantern , then Captain America, Rise of the Apes and kill your asshole boss (or whatever it’s called) . What a summer!
